CURRICULUM PROPOSAL

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has proposed a vocationally oriented curriculum built within a Three-Stream Model. The aim of the model is to establish a diverse curriculum offering learners more opportunities to achieve educational outcomes based on their interests, abilities and skills. There are various subject choice and combination options possible within these frameworks.

The three-stream model includes a:

  • Academic stream

  • Technical stream

  • Skills stream

The Academic and Technical curriculum can lead to a National Senior Certificate (matric) and access to possible further teaching and learning. The Skills curriculum can lead to Year 4 NQF, with career opportunities in related fields.

Together with the three learning plans proposed above, a ‘Wellness Curriculum’ is planned

in parallel with the school subjects. This would include:

Academic and career development

These include:

  • study skills

  • reading and literacy skills (especially for second or third language speakers)

  • exposure to career opportunities in the area

  • help with subject choice and choices about further education

  • and work readiness (such as in the preparation of CVs, preparation of job interviews and work ethics)

Psycho-social support

These include:

  • preventative services (through workshops with learners, parents and teachers)

  • crisis management and intervention

  • individual support and/or therapy and referrals, social development

  • and referrals to relevant well-being services

The curriculum will be finalised after receiving input from the community and in consultation with the WCED. Please click on the link below for details on proposed subject choices within the 3 streams.
